"This Side of Paradise" is the lead single, title track and third track off Hayley Kiyoko's sophmore extended play of the same name, This Side of Paradise. It was self-released as a single on September 29, 2014.
Background[]
While on her One Bad Night Tour, Hayley revealed that this song was about her experiences having crushes on girls while in middle school. Not ready to come out and not completely aware of what the crushes meant, she said she would come home from school and imagine a paradise where people accepted her and the girls she liked would like her back. Music Video[]
The music video was released on November 12, 2014. It was directed by RJ Sanchez.
This song was released before Kiyoko publicly came out and was comfortable with talking about her sexuality and thus explains why the music video features her kissing a man. Based on this people assumed Hayley was bisexual however, she has confirmed that she is a lesbian.[2][3]
