"Runaway" was first teased on December 10, 2019 on Kiyoko's Instagram when she shared a picture that reads "I'm a freak freak out" which lead some fans to believe the song was going to be called "Freak".[2] The post also confirmed the release date to be Friday, December 13.[2] The song's official name and cover art were both revealed on December 11, 2019.[3] Moreover, the post also features a small snippet of the song that feature the "I'm a freak freak out" lyrics from the previous post.
