"Feelings" is the lead[1] and second single and the second track off Hayley Kiyoko's debut ablum, Expectations. It was released on October 19, 2017 through Atlantic and Empire.
Background[]
This song was first announced on October 14, 2017, the same day that Hayley announced she was working on her debut album.[2] It was also the first song to be announced to be on Expectations, even though not being the first one that was released.
It was released as the lead single, and at that time only confirmed single, off of Hayley's debut album on October 19, 2017.[3]
Feelings was confirmed to be the second track off the album on March 8, 2018[4] during the "#CountdownToExpectations" that took place on Hayley Kiyoko's social media profiles to promote the release of the album.
- "I wanted to write an anthem celebrating these âfeelings,â as opposed to suppressing them like society often makes people do in todayâs dating scene. We have feelings, we get involved, and sometimes we canât control it. After all, weâre human."
- —Hayley Kiyoko in an interview with Flaunt
- "Iâm currently single, and I remember going into the studio and just complaining, âWhy do I have to be so ashamed of feelings? Why is that so bad?ââĤ I want people to watch the video and have it remind them of that first moment â the butterflies when you first get hooked on somebody."
- —Hayley Kiyoko in an interview with Buzzfeed
Hayley started teasing her fans with many posts over her social media in order to advertise this song a week prior to its release. She later dubbed the week "#GayleyKiyokoWeek" which is a hashtag that her fans created.
Moreover, leading up to the song's release Hayley let stars from previous music videos take over her Instagram account and posted screencaps and lyrics of past music videos.[5]
Lyrics[]
[Intro]
(Feelings)
[Verse 1]
I walk through this world, just tryna be nice
They say I'll get hurt, if I'm not like ice
I know I've got friends, I still get so lonely
If I look in your eyes, Iâll want you to hold me
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm sorry that I care, care
I'm sorry that I care, care
It's really not that fair, fair
I can't help but care
[Chorus]
I over-communicate and feel too much
I just complicate it when I say too much
I laugh about it, dream about that casual touch
Sex is fire, sick and tired of acting all tough
I'm hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I'm feelin'
This love asylum, like an island, just me and you
Spent the night, you got me high
Oh, what did you do?
I'm hooked on all these feelings
[Verse 2]
Caught up inside, both happy and lonely
Keep telling me lies, they're killing me slowly
I get too attached, they don't even know me
Why can't I relax? Why can't I relax?
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm sorry that I care, care
I'm sorry that I care, care
It's really not that fair, fair
I can't help but care
[Chorus]
I over-communicate and feel too much
I just complicate it when I say too much
I laugh about it, dream about that casual touch
Sex is fire, sick and tired of acting all tough
I'm hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I'm feelin'
This love asylum, like an island, just me and you
Spent the night, you got me high
Oh, what did you do?
I'm hooked on all these feelings
[Bridge]
I'm hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I'm feelin'
I'm sorry that I care, care
It's really not that fair
[Chorus]
I over-communicate and feel too much
I just complicate it when I say too much
I laugh about it, dream about that casual touch
Sex is fire, sick and tired of acting all tough
I'm hooked on all these feelings
I know exactly what I'm feelin'
This love asylum, like an island, just me and you
Spent the night, you got me high
Oh, what did you do?
I'm hooked on all these feelings
